Biography

 
 

Young Italian-German soprano Alessia Schumacher enjoyed a very musical upbringing. She completed her voice studies at the Hochschule für Musik „Hanns Eisler“ in Berlin and at Conservatori Superior del Liceu in Barcelona. 2018/19 she was a member of the excellency program Barock Vokal in Mainz. Alessia previously studied violin at the Conservatorio „Giuseppe Verdi“ in Como and holds degrees in History of Art and Musicology from the University of Vienna.

Alessia has been awarded a number of scholarships (Bernbeck Exzellenzstipendium, DAAD, Luzia-Loeser Kulturfonds), she is an alumni of the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation „Live Music Now“ and received the prestigious Bayreuth scholarship in 2016. She is a prize winner of international competitions, a.a. the Concorso lirico internazionale „Piero Boni“ in Brescia (1st prize, 2017).

While studying she already collaborated with the Berliner Philharmoniker (Menotti/The Telephone, 2015), giving her Konzerthaus Berlin debut as Gretel (Humperdinck/Hänsel und Gretel, 2016) soon after. As a winner of the Schloss Rheinsberg Festival competition, she debuted the role of Michaela in summer 2017. The following year Alessia sang her first Mimì in concert at Konzerthaus Berlin, as well as Franziska Cagliari (Wiener Blut) at the Choriner Opernsommer. In 2019 she celebrated her debut as Grilletta (Lo Speziale) in a co-production with Lautten Compagney Berlin, Teatru Manoel on Malta and Liebhabertheater Schloss Kochberg, as well as her return to Konzerthaus Berlin to perform „The Gruffalo“ by Iván Fischer. Further operatic roles include Pamina (Zauberflöte), Echo (Ariadne auf Naxos), Marie (Der Diktator), First Lady (Zauberflöte), Romilda (Serse), Musetta (La Bohème) and Livietta (Livietta Tracollo).

Equally at home in operatic and concert repertoire, Alessia celebrated her Dartington Festival debut in 2018, jumping in as Eve in Haydn’s Creation directed by Dame Jane Glover. That same year she performed in a staged version of Elias/Mendelssohn with Kammerakademie Potsdam and 400 children. She regularly performs in oratorios and concerts across Germany.

As a Lied recital singer, Alessia enjoys collaborating with pianists Maria Yulin and Alissa Firsova. In 2018 she started a new collaboration with jazz-vibraphone player Hauke Renken. Alessia also co-created the theatre performance piece “Deus ex machina” in 2011, which was performed throughout Europe and Turkey.

In February 2020 Alessia performed once more with the Berliner Philharmoniker as Cercatrice in Puccini’s “Suor Angelica: Faith to Face”, directed by Nicola Hümpel and conducted by Kirill Petrenko. In Summer 2021 she gave her debut in the role of Rosalinde/Die Fledermaus at Schlossfestspiele Ettlingen. Future engagements include a new production with Lautten Compagney Berlin and Liebhabertheater Schloss Kochberg with “L’impresario in angustie” by Cimarosa led by Wolfgang Katschner.
